Today's journey starts in Dallas, Texas.

We're departing from DFW's Terminal D.

Inside you'll find the American Airlines check-in desks, a blend of self-service kiosks and manned desks.

We bag dropped and were then ready to go. We'd also arrived early in case of any TSA chaos.

Lot's of promotion for the impending World Cup too. This was shot in April but of course it now kicks off in a matter of days!

And what a difference a few days make, from 2hr queue lines at LaGuardia to just a 4-min average wait time here at DFW. Great stuff.

We headed over to gate D32 where the Plaza Premium Lounge is located.

Not a good start to be met with this sign!

We were refused access using Priority Pass but our trusty American Express Platinum card did the trick and we were admitted through the Global Lounge Collection scheme. Strange though, it's either full or not in my opininon!

It's fairly new and had only opened a few weeks before our arrival.

There's plentiful seating dotted all around the lounge.

Plus this nice bar towards the rear. As Plaza Premium Lounges go, it's pretty decent.

Some nice food too like this chicken with lime and cilantro rice and poblano ranch dressing. It was really tasty.

The desserts were great, too! Chocolate covered strawberries, tres leches cake, warm cookies - I was very satisfied!

As we headed to the gate we got a glimpse of this gorgeous sunset. What a view!

It was then time for us to board!

We were in Boarding Group 5 today.

Here are our seats for this overnight leg to São Paulo. 12K and 12L (the window and middle) on the forward-most row of the Economy cabin. This is marketed as "Main Cabin Extra" by AA.

The legroom is okay, not bad but equally not half as good as an emergency exit row next to the doors.

The IFE screens are stored in your armrest, along with your tray table.

There's also underseat AC power - which was a plus point.

Main Cabin Extra passengers also have dedicated reserved overhead space, another nice touch.

But the cabin, my oh my was it battered and unclean…

…like this wonderfully thick cloud of dust all around the air conditioning. When was this last cleaned?

Dinner, anyone?!

We then taxied out to runway 17R for our departure down to Brazil.

And before we knew it, we were airborne. 12L has a great view as you're practically 'sitting on the wing'.

Take a look at the video above and I dive more into the IFE, but it was very clunky and had a considerable amount of lag.

And then, dinner was served!

We ordered one of each, this was the pasta bolognese, and it was… awful! Over seasoned, over cooked - just an appalling meal.

The other option was a chicken dish. It was in a strange sweet and smoky sauce with beans and peas. This was equally poor and that chicken was so overcooked it was past it!

The starter was a small salad with grated cheese.

There was a bread roll (that was still semi-frozen).

Alongside a portion of crackers, Grassland salted butter and this Gruyere soft cheese (which had never in it's life seen a piece of gruyere!).

Dessert was this cinnamon churro bar. It was rock hard, very chewy and synthetically sweet. All in all, a real letdown of a meal service from AA in our opinion.

My toilet check turned up nothing, they were in fact very clean, but the toilets my husband checked were absolutely appalling. I will make a point to not show you what was 'smothered' all over the wall on here, but if you're the curious type, have a look at the video above. Hold your breath and make sure you've had your dinner!

At the gate prior to boarding, the agent made an announcement to specifically draw attention to the 'super-fast Wi-Fi' that was available on today's flight. Shock horror, it didn't work once.

The trays took ages to be cleared away and the cabin was then immediately plunged into darkness as we flew over the Caribbean.

It was time for me to get some sleep but the in-flight map on the bulkhead screen was never switched off. If you're sensitive to light, this will really bother you.

The seat is very uncomfortable and I tossed and turned for the most part of the night before being semi-awoken by a change in lighting.

I went to the back to see if AA were offering anything and all that was available was either Minute Maid juices, still water, pre-packaged peanuts and leftover crackers from the night before. It's unbelievable to think the size of AA's operation and just how badly they've got this wrong.

Quite close to landing, the breakfast service began.

In Premium Economy, the offering was a frittata (I'm so glad we avoided this) and in Economy, you were given this ambient breakfast bag.

There was a Chobani vanilla greek yoghurt with a sachet of seeds, dessicated coconut and dried dates. It was nice.

This Natures Bakery Fig Bar however was frozen solid. And I mean, frozen!

And that was pretty much it, we started our descent just as breakfast was concluded.

So quick in fact, it felt like the crew were rushing people to finish up. Perhaps serve it earlier?

We then glided down towards São Paulo Guarulhos Airport.

Arriving pretty much on time!

And that concludes my first ever long-haul American Airlines flight and all I can say is, what an underwhelming experience that one was. Surely AA can do better… Surely?!
Pretty much on par with what I’ve come to expect from AA.
As a former frequent AA flyer, who now tries to avoid them whenever possible, I’ve learnt the hard way over the years to have veeeery low expectations…in any cabin. Of course it’s possible to have a good crew and overall good experience, but the vast majority of my experiences over the past few years have been mediocre. I’m just happy if the flight is reasonably on time and nothing goes wrong.
The « super fast wifi » on wide bodies is very hit or miss and as you mentioned, even when it’s supposed to be there, it doesn’t always work. The wifi experience on narrow bodies is much better (you would think it should be the opposite where long-haul is prioritised, but nope!)
Thanks for sharing and remember to go in to any flight with AA (and most US carriers) with low expectations, because then you may be pleasantly surprised if the experience is decent haha
Thanks Kevin - this seems to be the trending and should I say overwhelming response to this video. The Wi-Fi on last weeks trip between LGA-DFW on their aged Boeing 737-800 was incredible. It was a Viasat service and I hit way over 100Mbps, yet couldn't even connect on this long haul trip.
It's very rare that a flight these days becomes "a total write-off" but boy, that's exactly what this one was. I'm in no rush to return to AA anytime soon, especially as lots of people have said premium cabins also give a lacklustre service.
