This is the second part of my May trip to Europe. First part can be found at http://flight-report.com/en/report-7555.html - Air Canada LGA-YYZ
Upon coming off my plane from LGA, I entered the main YYZ terminal. Transit passengers were directed to a special immigration desk and I was quickly stamped through

This is the first time for me in the international section of YYZ. I guess I got used to the grade scale of things at JFK…I found YYZ's international section to be somewhat smaller than I expected. Nevertheless it is a very nicely designed and well up-kept terminal with some interesting designs like the one pictured below.

photo IMG_3134

And this would only be in Canada. No one in NYC is nice enough to have this happen

photo IMG_3135

I paid a quick visit to Air Canada's maple leaf lounge.

photo IMG_3144

The lounge was very large. Yet I still found it somewhat crowded. International flights at YYZ are overwhelmingly trans-atlantic and therefore all depart around roughly the same time. With all *A and J pax it was difficult to locate a seat.

photo IMG_3142

I eventually found an open workstation

photo IMG_3140

More pictures of the crowded lounge

photo IMG_3143

Food option was much improved over typical US carriers. Two kinds of hot food was offered and I recall the wine selection being fairly good.

photo IMG_3139

I left the lounge 1hr15 before departure to take a quick tour of the terminal. As I was coming out of the lounge I spotted this AirCanada Rouge

photo IMG_3147

I find the YYZ international terminal very attractive - lots of sunlight and lots of seating and charing places.

photo IMG_3136

LH gate it is.

The big bird taking me to FRA today

OS flight to VIE one gate over

photo IMG_3155

YYZ's evening bank was not as busy as I thought

photo IMG_3148

Gate area got very crowded. Boarding started with a 10 minutes delay.

photo IMG_3154

Once onboard, pre-departure drinks were served. Aircraft interior was the ancient business class, not flat but okay for this short flight to Germany.

photo IMG_3156

I did manage to score an exit row seat.

Old LH J class seat.

photo IMG_3168

Flying time was short today - barely 7 hours in the air. Cabin crew served drinks quickly after taking off.

photo IMG_3158

The wine was not bad, but I have defiantly had better (on AF and even occasionally DL). Appetizer plating must have been changed recently - I found it very attractive and tasty.

photo IMG_3160

The entree was an Asian fusion dish. Being ex-YYZ it was good enough. Tasted better than it looked.

photo IMG_3161

Soon desert carts rolled around!

photo IMG_3162

I had a cheese plate and some port.

photo IMG_3165

I had a very good night (well 3 hrs) of sleep. Woke up somewhere over England I think.

photo IMG_3166

Breakfast was soon served - standard continental

Conclusion

It was a very pleasant flight. I think it is a very positive thing that LH is now refitting their business class cabin on long haul aircrafts. With AF being the last major European carrier starting to covert to full flat in business class, there is no more reason for LH to remain behind. The service was very efficient, almost to the point that I felt strongly I was a part of an assembly lane. However since it was a quick overnight flight I found such service to be sufficient. Hope you enjoyed this report! I will have a BA 787 CW report up here (hopefully) soon!

  • Thanks for this FR !

  • The crowding of the lounge cannot be blamed on LH; it that shows a simple undersizing of the facility.

I assume the menu labeled as such, but the entree looks more Asian than fusion to me (not sure the two slices of carrot are enough for the Western side).

  • Thanks for sharing this nice report with great pictures.

YYZ looks pleasant and the gate area seems very inviting with plenty of seats and tables.

I see that LH still has trouble providing proper salt/pepper shakers on the trays. Appetizer plate looks different and somewhat bigger. The main dish is poorly presented and does not live up to the standards of a premium cabin. A take out from any decent Chinese restaurant looks better than that. If LH is going to serve an Asian noodle dish, at least invest in some quality ingredients and do a seafood noodle dish with ingredients like scallops or shrimps.

Breakfast is a bit on the small side and could be more generous.

  • Great report! Those old LH seats are terrible--the angle is too steep, as we can see from one of your cabin pics. clubs are definitely a notch above U.S. clubs. I'm pleasantly surprised by the nice presentation of the appetizer. Looking forward to the BA 787 CW report! Thanks for sharing!
