WestJet- What a Deal!!!
WestJet has come a long way since their humble beginnings in Calgary in 1996. Since the merger between Air Canada and Canadian Airlines in 2001, WestJet has risen to the secondary force in the Canadian airline industry. The airline operates on its mainline network a mainly Boeing 737s using as of late-2025 a mix of Boeing 737-700, Boeing 737-800 & Boeing 737-8MAX with long-haul operations mainly from their main hub of Calgary Airport to Europe and Asia operated by the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

I knew I was going to be flying with WestJet on this trip and I found an absolute steal online when planning my trip… For only £50 (CA/$90) I was able to fly from Vancouver to Regina with two stops in Edmonton and Calgary… Had I done a flight from Edmonton to Regina or even a Vancouver to Regina via one of the two stops on this route- the next available fare was being quoted at…. £115 (CA/$210)
The three flight booking was a no-brainer, I had a mix of aircraft too with the first flight (YVR-YEG) being on a Boeing 737 and the remaining two being on WestJet Encore Q-400, plus as I have a Flying Blue account with KLM- I could earn some air miles on this, which I was chuffed with!

Despite the chaos with Flair Airlines and the loss of my hotel in Vancouver… I was able to get to Vancouver Airport with enough time to easily go from my heavily delayed Flair flight over to the WestJet gates to head back on myself, setting an unplanned personal record of making FOUR flights in ONE day instead of 3 Flights… So let's dive into this flight with WestJet!

Hello from Vancouver Airport (YVR)
If you want to recap my adventure thus far…

Carrying on from the last flight on the trip, I landed into Vancouver Airport at 03:00AM local time, when I should have arrived at 09:35pm the previous night… I had about 3 hours before my WestJet flight back to Edmonton Airport, luckily the gate was already set up on the departure board, so I knew where I had to go… as I was travelling between domestic flights I didn't have to go between arrivals and departures, and I had no checked bags- which was a life saver!
Also notice on the top-left screen below the two Air Canada flights going from YVR to YYZ, they got very similar flight numbers but one is cancelled and they're both due to fly out at the same time… can anyone shed light on this?

The Vancouver Airport is so eery at 03:00AM with hardly anyone about, everything was closed up except for a Starbucks which was preparing to open up at 4AM! I opted to find my gate area, sit down and set my alarm for 05:15am so I could get about 90 more minutes of powering napping in before my flight.

I got awoken about 04:50am by a tanoy and opted to go quickly to the WestJet counter near by to get some paper boarding passes as a souvenir of my trip, I had already checked in online and got the e-ticket boarding passes, but I like to acquire the real deal when possible.
Eventually boarding began, after waiting on the families & assistance passengers it was time to board the flyers with WestJet status and premium cabin bookings, then I was the first from the "Riff-Raff" lane.

WestJet Boeing 737-MAX (YVR-YEG)
The WestJet Boeing 737-8MAX operating this flight "back the way I came" was C-GFJQ, an odd-ball in the WestJet fleet as it was built brand new in July 2023 for… Lynx Air! It flew for Lynx Air (as C-GJHK) until the airline ceased flying in February 2024. It found itself stored in Tucson, Arizona from late-February to late-August 2024 before being fully acquired by WestJet and re-registered before entering service with its current airline on December 1st 2024, just in time for the Christmas rush! By the time I flew on this aircraft it was just shy of its 1st Anniversary with WestJet!

I boarded the flight and took my seat in Seat 17F, which offered a great view of the starboard wing and you could easily see the Engine 2 from where I was as well as getting a good bit of view below from aft of the wing. Looking back on this flight, I think the cabin is still the standard cabin used when this plane flew for Lynx Air, but that's only looking at other WestJet 737 flight videos & reports… I could be wrong, but I speculate.

The seat was in a basic design for short-haul flights on a low-cost carrier. The seat had a decent enough tray table and a seat back pocket with various magazines, the safety card and a menu card.

Boarding was completed quickly and we were basically off for a prompt departure. The cabin crew did their safety demo and dimmed the cabin, it wasn't a quiet flight by any means- but I saw a lot of empty seats…

We taxied over to the Runway, as we taxied around YVR- I spotted the Flair Boeing 737 that had only 3 hours earlier dropped me in Vancouver! Our departure Runway for today would be on Runway 08R, putting us in the right direction for a direct route towards Alberta!
We took off pre-dawn, so it would be a bit of a while into the flight before we witnessed the dawn break, as we took off out of Vancouver Airport we headed towards the Fraser River, avoiding flying directly over Vancouver, Richmond and turning heading towards Edmonton as we approached Surrey… I assumed this was due to noise abatement at an early time of the day.

Once we took off, I had a quick flick through the menu and magazine provided by WestJet, of course the best page worth showing is the Fleet and Network! I remember looking into this page and thinking "Now I'll have to get a flight on their 787 from LHR!" to complete the flight experiences!

Eventually on this short 70 minute flight, the sun began to break out from the Horizon… It was beautiful seeing this, so I chose well to sit on the right side of the plane, the left side would have been in total darkness! It also made for an excellent cover photo for the Flight Report.

Soft Drinks and basic snacks are complimentary on WestJet, so I opted to enjoy a chocolate biscuit with an orange juice and a coffee provided by McDonalds! I found that a bit of a novelty given our Coffee options in Europe tend to be Nescafe or Lavazza! It was an ample snack option for a flight of just over 1hr!

Our flight was basically a straight line from Vancouver to Edmonton, we passed over Kamloops and crossed the boarder between British Columbia and Alberta as we flew near Mica Creek, but now the sunrise was in full swing.

I slept off a part of the flight, waking up as we started our decent back into Edmonton Airport. As we descended into Edmonton, we flew into some thick clouds, there was snow across the fields everywhere to be seen, something I hadn't seen on the previous flights in and out of Edmonton as they were at night.

We landed on time in Edmonton Airport, it was dull and cloudy but the morning rush at the Airport was well underway. We parked up on stand completing a line-up of Boeing 737s that included two other Boeing 737-8MAX from Air Canada & WestJet as well as a Boeing 737-300 from Canadian North.

I waited for the other passengers to leave so I grab a few more cabin photos of this Boeing 737 before leaving. I didn't ask about a cockpit visit as I was really tired and I wanted to get some solid breakfast at Edmonton Airport before my next WestJet flight, I had about 2 hours to change flights and we'd arrived on time which was brilliant.

Getting off and back into Edmonton Airport, I left with a pretty good impression of WestJet and their Boeing 737 operation. I was interested to see what awaited me on the WestJet Encore Q-400 later in the morning… but I'll get onto that in the next report!
Nice to have gotten one of these all-Economy aircraft as these ex-Lynx/Swoop/Sunwing cabins will be rare soon as WestJet seem to be retrofitting them with more standard 2 cabin configurations. Personally I would prefer to fly a standard WS 737 as they have streaming IFE, in-seat power, and more legroom. It's good that you got a decent price as it seems prices in Canada are usually pretty high and aren't getting any better with so little competition on the domestic market, especially with the recent mergers and smaller LCCs going out of business.
