It’s been a while since my last trip report with life, job changes, and new responsibilities took over for a bit. Things have finally settled down, and I’m glad to be back. Expect more reports coming soon.

This flight is the first of three Business Class segments on this trip, and it was booked as an award ticket. It wasn’t the highest-value redemption out there, but at least I managed to lock it in before the recent devaluation so I’ll take that as a small win. 

Today’s journey starts at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. Traffic in the city was surprisingly light for 7 a.m. After heading inside, I opted to get my luggage wrapped. I have to say, Bangkok and Bali both do an excellent job with luggage wrapping, and the pricing is far more reasonable than what you see in Singapore.

Singapore Airlines uses Row K for check-in at BKK, and there was no queue at all for Business Class. If you’re flying Economy or just prefer not to wait, the airport now has a huge number of self check-in and self bag-drop machines, all of which are straightforward to use.

Security and passport control at BKK have become impressively quick. I consistently clear both in under 10 minutes, and today was no exception just 8 minutes from completing check-in to passing immigration via the eGates. Whatever changes they’ve implemented, it’s a massive improvement and absolutely the right direction for the airport. 

Our flight today will be departing from Concourse D which is in close proximity to both Silverkris and Royal Orchid Lounge.

The Bangkok Silverkris lounge is located in Concourse D, just a little bit further along the corridors on level 3. I have heard good things about this lounge and I am eager to try.

The lounge was surprisingly busy that morning, with most of the available seats clustered around the dining area.

The bar itself is extremely good with lots of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options to choose from. For September, I tried the Thai Tea mocktail on the seasonal menu and found it refreshing (though I eventually went back to champagne). The morning food selection was, in my view, slightly above average. Kaya toast, dim sum, and the pink noodles were the standouts.

Out of curiosity, I also popped into the TG Royal Orchid Lounge, which is Thai Airways’ newest lounge. It was noticeably less crowded and much brighter than SilverKris, with a wider range of food options and even a made-to-order egg station. They were also showcasing a “Chef of the Month” menu that looked far more interesting unfortunately, it’s only available at specific times.

Boarding

After spending sometime at the lounge, I slowly make my way to the gate where priority boarding was in progress. Today's flight will be on an A350-900 Medium Haul with the registration 9V-SHG. I was greeted by the flight attendant and soon make my way to seat 17A that I selected when making a booking.

Singapore Airlines' medium haul business class seat is configured in a staggered 1-2-1 configuration. If you are flying solo, the best seats and the ones by the window ideally, the seats should be close to the window to enjoy more privacy (but getting in and out will be a tad more difficult than ones by the aisle.

Waiting at the seat are pillow and a light fleece-ish blanket. In the storage on the console table, there are noise cancelling headphones, menu, and a bottle of water waiting. There's also a pull-out mirror as well.

While waiting for boarding to finish, the crew came around offering juices and I went with a refreshing apple juice, followed shortly by a hot towel. In the seat pocket, you’ll find the usual stuffs: the safety information card, Wi-Fi instructions, and the duty-free catalogue.

For this flight breakfast came with three main options: an omelette, Rad Nar Talay (a Thai dish of stir-fried broad noodles with seafood gravy, similar to seafood hor fun), and a dim sum set. These were served alongside fresh fruit, yoghurt, and pastries. The dim sum and Rad Nar Talay seemed to be the crowd favourites on this flight.

Singapore Airlines also lets you pre-select your main course before departure, and the crew will circle back to confirm your choice once onboard.

Soon we start pushing back with safety video being shown on all screens. When I took the flight, the airline had just announced a new version of the video, but it’ll clearly take some time before it reaches the whole fleet. By the time the video wrapped up, we were already lined up for take-off. Moments later, we climbed out over the eastern coast of Thailand and continued south, passing just beyond Pattaya (There is a marina there too!)

Flight and Meal

After the seatbelt sign has been switched off, I quickly visited the lavatory and found that they are clean and featured amenities from Payot. There are also dental kit and razors available in the drawers as well.

Soon after, the table was set with fresh fruit, a chocolate muffin, vanilla yoghurt, and sparkling water. A few minutes later, the main course arrived piping hot. Coffee or tea followed to wrap up the meal (I had americano) although I forgot to snap a photo of that.

Arrival into Singapore

After 2 hours, we began our descent into Singapore Changi and ended up with a surprisingly long taxi to our Terminal 2 gate. Right after deplaning, there was an additional security check that took around 10 minutes to clear—something I’ve never encountered before. Thai’s A350 was parked beside us, so I’m not sure if they were doing a special screening or what.

Immigration was effortless thanks to the eGates, and luggage showed up after a short 6–7 minute wait. In total, I was out in about 20 minutes, even with a quick detour to snap a few photos of the indoor garden. Genuinely impressive.
