Our flight today departs the dreaded T4S. I hate to slate Madrid-Barajas but in my opinion this is a deeply underperforming and chaotic airport. One of the worst in Europe.

I spy, with my little eye, lots of Iberia planes!

We then had around 2 hours pre-flight to unwind in the VIP Sala Neptuno Lounge, located within the confines of the T4S terminal.

It's really airy inside with lots of seating options and great apron views.

There's a great selection of drinks.

photo screenshot-2025-07-01-at-174635

As well as sandwiches, hot food, breads and toast, continental items, olives and bar snacks - too!

We boarded on time and were bussed to the aircraft as our A330-200 was waiting on a remote stand.

Today's aircraft is named after the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo.

Just one of many examples of the incredibly filthy and outdated Iberia cabin.

We then sat waiting, and waiting, and waiting, before the Captain announced that the aircraft had an issue that maintenance couldn't fault. We were to de-board this aircraft and return to the terminal whilst Iberia came up with a solution.

We made a break for it, whilst the chance allowed!

Tempers frayed in the terminal with Iberia's staff consistently lying about our new departure time. Eventually, they walked off and abandoned all 200-odd passengers with no updates or access to water, food or communication.

We were directed to the Iberia customer service centre. It was closed.

Finally, after hours and hours, we boarded a new aircraft. Another A330-200 to take us to Rio de Janeiro (GIG).

Climbing out of Madrid.

The first Iberia meal service. Spanish 'albondigas' meatballs in a tomato sauce with cheese-topped potato dauphinoise and a roasted padron pepper. Served with a warm white bread roll, cous cous, sour cream and tomato starter and an apple and cinnamon crumble-topped cake. I opted for a bottle of still water and a can of Coca-Cola Zero.

The Iberia A330-200 Economy 'Turista Class' cabin.

Absolutely filthy and dated toilets.

Tried another bathroom, dirty and damaged. Reported to Cabin Crew who said "We know", before ignoring the issue and keeping the toilet serviceable for the entirety of the flight.

Attempted to get some sleep but the crew had disappeared to the crew rest and left the galley lights on and curtains open. This meant anyone on Row 21 (us!) couldn't get any sleep due to the glaring light. Also, a cart was left unsecured with drinks atop.

3 hours before landing, a Tapas box was handed out, consisting of olives, breadsticks and a queso cheese dip.

Some beautiful coloured skies over the south Atlantic.

photo screenshot-2025-07-01-at-180342

90 minutes before landing a ham and cheese sandwich was handed out. No dessert or further food. This was served with a soft drink, of your choice, from the bar.

At this point, under an hour to go, we were very close to being 4 hours late. Thus qualifying for €600 per person in compensation (that makes the awful experience a little more bearable).

On approach into Rio de Janeiro (GIG).

We landed over 4 hours late (just!) and made our applications to Iberia for the necessary EU261 compensation. This was in our bank accounts within 7 days of submission - finally something that Iberia can do right!

Conclusion

Buckle up - this one’s a ride. I flew Iberia’s Turista (economy) class from Madrid (MAD) to Rio de Janeiro (GIG) aboard their Airbus A330-200… and let’s just say, it wasn’t smooth skies.

From maintenance issues to chaotic boarding and questionable service to a cabin that felt stuck in the past, this long-haul flight didn’t quite deliver the fiesta. But was there anything redeeming about Iberia’s South America route? Join me for the full flight experience, warts and all.
