Hello everyone, welcome to the report from Munich to Istanbul with Turkish Airlines. It has been 5 years since my last travel with Turkish Airlines, which is interesting for me to see how the airline looks like after all these years.

24 hours before departure, I checked in at Turkish Airlines website. The mobile boarding pass was not available for the flight. I could only get the boarding pass in pdf format.

On the day of flight, we arrived at Munich airport roughly more than 3 hours before departure because the S-Bahn train is really unreliable these days. When I left my home, I had already received E-mail from Turkish Airlines that the departure time of our flight would be delayed from 18:55pm to 19:35pm. Turkish Airlines is using Terminal 1 although they are a member of Star Alliance. Once we got off the train, we found from the FIDS that our flight would depart from Concourse B.

The check-in counters however were allocated in Concourse C. The counters were not opened 3 hours before the departure time, it seemed that we were a bit early. Nevertheless, we just queued up in front of the gate and at 15:00pm the counters started to operate.

After we checked our luggage, we went to McDonald to have a late lunch. We came back at around 17:10pm. The security check and immigration were very smooth and we reached our gate in no time.

Our gate B17. Personally I don't like this gate because it is located in a small corridor and usually it gets very crowd when boarding starts.

At 18:12pm, our plane finally arrived from Istanbul.

Etihad Airways B787-9, A6-BNA arrived from Abu Dhabi and parked next to our plane.

As the boarding time approached, we tried to wait as close as the gate.

Our ride to Istanbul tonight. The A330-300, TC-JNO delivered to Turkish Airline in March 2012, would take us to Istanbul tonight. It carries the name Boğaziçi.

The two paper boarding passes I got for my flight to Istanbul and Hong Kong.

Eventually boarding was started at 18:50pm. The boarding process was simple and there was not any boarding sequence, just between business class and economy class.

My seat 22K. A pillow was placed on the seat. seats were with adjustable headrest.

Cabin view during boarding. There was no air-conditioning and the cabin was very hot.

Back of the economy seat. There was also a remote control but since it was a touch screen, I did not use it. One can tell the aging of the aircraft from the faded printing on the screen button.

Foot rest was available.

At 19:14pm boarding was completed. 2 minutes later our captain announced that the flight time would be 2 hours and 10 minutes. At the same time, the cabin attendants were giving out earphones to passengers.

Safety demonstration video was then played.

At 19:25pm, pushback was initiated.

I took a look at the IFE menu, trying to look for films to watch.

There were also some Live TV channels. I remembered in the past I watched some football match on SPORT24 channel. Tonight it broadcasted the English Premier League match, Wolf vs Crystal Palace.

While we were taxing to the runway the cabin light was turned off. We then took off from RWY08R.

5 minutes after takeoff, the cabin light was turned on again. The flight map.

I started to watch a movie, Civil War.

At 20:05pm, I went to the lavatory in the middle of the aircraft, to take off some clothes due to the hot cabin.

50 minutes after takeoff, dinner was served. There were two options, beef or pasta and I opted for the beef. I requested white wine as the complementary drink.

At 21:07pm, the final announcement from our captain that we were going to land in 40 minutes. 10 minutes later the seatbelt sign was turned on.

At 21:03pm, the cabin light was turned off for landing. Somewhere over Türkiye.

At local time 22:49pm, we landed on RWY35L. Total flight time was 2 hours and 5 minutes.

Conclusion

It's been 5 years since my last flight with Turkish Airline, the entertainment and catering are still superior to those European carriers. Turkish Airlines is still one of the best long haul option for me.

  • Thanks for sharing this FR, well photographed as always. Solid Y product on TK with their ability to bring Asian service standards to European routes. I’m not a fan of these old blue cabins, but it’s probably not too long until these A330s get phased out. The arrival time is always deceptive at IST since the taxi back from 35L to the terminal takes forever.

    • Hi NGO85,

Thanks for your comment, the seats are indeed quite old and show some sort of wearing. By the way I love reading your reports for the domestic flight reports in Japan back in some years ago. Merry Christmas!

  • Awesome review with beautiful photos ! But didn't quite get the need to show the inside of the toilet bowl :(
