Return to Asia

This is the last leg of my very last-minute booking to get home.  It's quite unfortunate that LH switched to a 744 on this route, It would have eased the pain of my ruined plans somewhat if I could have booked LH F on the 748 last minute.  I had just flown that product a few months earlier and had a great flight.  Let's see how the J product compares.

Lufthansa Senator Lounge Z

Gate A11 was very close to passport control and there was no line at all.  For once I zipped through the Frankfurt passport control and headed straight for the familiar Senator Lounge in Z.

photo 20240107_162650

No lines for the lounge today either, I was processed through very quickly.

photo 20240107_162713

The lounge was a normal amount of busy–plenty of people, but not packed.

photo 20240107_162734-36778

I headed straight for the showers.

photo 20240107_162751

I do like Lufthansa's shower facilities at their lounges, it's quite standardized and reasonably sizeable.  The La Prairie amenities are also a nice touch.

Here's a look at the lounge.  In over a decade of using this lounge, I've never been able to photograph it without a bunch of people here.  The different seating arrangements speak for themselves.

The buffet was constantly refreshed and while there weren't many hot options, it was decently tasty.

There is also plenty of coffee, juices, sparkling and mineral water on offer.

Self-serve alcohol is also available, with a few wines and beer.

I grabbed a small plate since I did not eat at the Lufthansa lounge in CDG and only nibbled at my meal on the flight over.

photo 20240107_171056

The lounge would offer a great view of the international gates except for the fact that these blinds are in the way.  I stayed in the lounge for about 90 minutes before heading over to my gate.

LH418

My last flight of this trip was on D-ABVY, a 23 years-old Boeing 747-400.

photo 20240107_162307

Boarding began at 12:21pm, 11 minutes behind schedule.

photo 20240107_180511

Lufthansa has 3 business class cabins on its 744s: one in the nose, one between the first two doors, and one encompassing the upper deck.

It's crazy to think that Lufthansa only finished retrofitting these cabins in the mid-2010s and thought a 2-3-2 layout was acceptable in the main business class cabin between the first two doors.  That middle seat, as you can see, is incredibly tight and exposed, with no storage.  I'd avoid these seats at all costs.

photo 20240107_182426

Right behind business class is the stair ways leading up to the upper deck.  While not having the grandeur of the A380 staircase, I just love stairs on an airplane.

photo 20240107_182450

The upper deck really has a lovely feel to it even though it's not direct aisle access.  There are 22 business class seats arranged in 5 and a half rows of 2-2.

photo 20240107_182617

Because I booked this flight literally within 24 hours of departure, I was stuck in 82C in the second row.  I was happy to just get an upper deck seat at all.

photo 20240107_182632

These Lufthansa business class seats, even though less than a decade old, are very uncompetitive and dated.  They lack storage, are exposed, and have a narrow footwell,   A blanket and pillow awaits at your seat, in addition to an amenity kit.  There is absolutely no privacy from the aisle in the aisle-adjacent seats.

By comparison, 82A, like other window-adjacent seats on the upper deck, has not only a much more open footwell, but also additional storage on the side.  There's a huge difference in the comfort of the seats.

photo 20240107_182715

Lavatories are in the front, as is the cockpit.  You'll notice that the bulkhead seats has a much winder footwell as well.

photo 20240107_182727

The cabin is broken up by a service station in the middle, where the emergency exits are.

photo 20240107_182735

I opted to have a glass of sparkling wine for my PDB.

photo 20240107_182924

The amenity kit was a large Porsche Design mesh bag, it was reasonably practical but a bit large for normal travel use.

photo 20240107_183016

Lufthansa uses AKG headphones in business class now.  I vaguely remember Lufthansa having Bose headphones in business class last time I flew their long-haul product 5 years ago.  These AKG headphones are a bit of a downgrade.

I was also offered a menu before takeoff:

Here's the wine list:

After most people boarded, the captain announced that one of the runways had closed due to winds, which led to a significant backup at FRA.  I received an email shortly afterwards that the new estimated departure time was 1:30pm.

The captain came back on at 1:20pm saying that he was still waiting for pushback clearance and that it should about 30 more minutes, but promised a shorter flight to IAD and estimated we would be about 20-25 minutes late from the expected arrival time.

At 1:49pm, we finally pushed back, 54 minutes behind schedule.  We then taxied for quite some time and took off at 2:14pm.

photo 20240107_192509

Approximately 15 minutes after takeoff, service began with a hot towel.

photo 20240107_203509

The tray table is a bit clunky and not very deep, but it gets the job done.

photo 20240107_203603

I opted for a glass of the Heidseick Monopole to start, which was accompanied by a ramekin of nuts.

photo 20240107_204755

For my appetizer, I had the duck breast with red cabbage, cashew nut, and lingonberries.  It was served with a seasonal salad.  This was actually a fairly decent appetizer.

photo 20240107_210443

A bread basket was offered at the same time, but no pretzel bread.

photo 20240107_210449

For my main, I had the a duck course that served as a replacement for the beef goulash.  It was accompanied by potatoes and cabbage.  All things considered, it wasn't that bad.

photo 20240107_213431

For dessert, I had the opera cake with red berry compote.

photo 20240107_215626

After lunch service, I checked out the lavatory, which was tiny.

photo 20240107_225123

There is a decent amount of amenities available though, including eye masks and mouth wash.

photo 20240107_225127

Waiting for me back at my seat was a set of Lindt pralines.  They were good.  Everything was cleaned up about 2 hours after takeoff.

photo 20240108_021649

I dozed off for a while after the lunch service before waking up with about 2 hours left in flight.  I did not take note of when exactly the pre-landing service started.  I had the skin fried corn-fed chicken with creamy polenta, fresh tomato sauce and leafy spinach.  It was dry and bland.

photo 20240108_022942

I asked for a glass of tea to wash it down.

photo 20240108_023715

Around 3:25pm ET, the captain announced that there was about 40 minutes left in flight.  We landed at 4:10pm ET.

photo 20240108_035946

We reached our gate 5 minutes later and then it was off to the people movers.

Conclusion

Lounge: The Senator Lounge by the Z Gates in Frankfurt is like all the other Lufthansa lounges in Germany and they are perfectly fine, albeit not exactly standout lounges. There is lots of seating, hot food, shower rooms, etc . . . all of the necessary amenities. The crowding wasn't as bad as it was in my last few visits, so that made things a bit better. One relatively easy way to improve things would be by adding more hot food options (i.e., a bigger buffet).

Cabin & Seat: Lufthansa's standard business cabin is really outdated and quite frankly unacceptable for a major international airline these days. The mini cabin on the upper deck does make things better by giving it a much more private feel, but it is still just a bad seat. There is no privacy, very little storage, and the seat itself is quite narrow. It gets worse in the second cabin on the lower deck with the 2-3-2 configuration.

Service: Service was fine on this flight, very much assembly line-esque, but the FAs were friendly and responsive whenever I asked for an additional drink.

Meal & Catering: Lufthansa's catering is average at best. I think they're falling behind their main competitors in Air France and British Airways. It was a passable meal though and the main meal service was actually better than my expectations (albeit they were low).

Bottom Line: I find there to be such a disparity between Lufthansa's first and business class products such that I try to actively avoid flying Lufthansa in J. Both Air France and British Airways offer a more consistent and better product these days. Here's hoping that Allegris will finally change things both in hard and soft product, though I don't actually think Allegris is better than the competitor transatlantic products.

  • LH J has just never appealed to me. It just seems very average and utilitarian. I will say that the food in the lounge looks good, or at least well-presented, for a Business lounge. The space itself looks a bit meh, though...like the old cabins.

It's crazy to think that Lufthansa only finished retrofitting these cabins in the mid-2010s and thought a 2-3-2 layout was acceptable in the main business class cabin between the first two doors.

AF had a middle seat in J on their 744s and got rid of it in favour of 2-2-2 many years before LH even started retrofitting this cabin! Just nuts to add a middle seat in J in the 2010s....but I guess they figured if Emirates can get away with it....

That middle seat just looks awful. The only time I would be ok with it is travelling with family. I can't even imagine being stuck between 2 strangers!

The upper deck is a whole other world from that cramped lower deck! Even with the 2-2 configuration it looks so spacious and exclusive---like a private jet! I used to loooove flying on the upper deck of the BA 747s when they were still around. At least those had privacy dividers--the LH seat just feels way too exposed for solo travellers.

The catering actually looks pretty good. I know I've said before many times I love to see duck and lamb on planes since it's pretty rare---the former, being much more rare than the latter. And here you are with duck appetiser and main course! Haha...Lucky duck 😋

Bottom Line: I find there to be such a disparity between Lufthansa's first and business class products such that I try to actively avoid flying Lufthansa in J.

Just nuts that LH have one of the best F products in the world, but one of the worst J products! I mean I guess it'll be better with the new Allegris cabins, but they have a grand total of like 2 or 3 planes with those after they were announced what...in 2017??? So yeah, I'm not holding my breath.

    Thanks

    • Thanks for reading, Kevin!

LH J has just never appealed to me. It just seems very average and utilitarian.

I agree, except nowadays it's very below-average in terms of hard product. I flew them a lot in the mid-2010s because of easy award availability.

The space itself looks a bit meh, though...like the old cabins.

The new Allegris lounge opened in Newark today . . . it looks a bit better? There didn't seem to be anything particularly exciting about it though.

I used to loooove flying on the upper deck of the BA 747s when they were still around. At least those had privacy dividers--the LH seat just feels way too exposed for solo travellers.

I avoided flying BA for the longest time because of those ancient lie-flat seats, but honestly, they might be better than the setup LH has even if both are 2-2.

The catering actually looks pretty good. I know I've said before many times I love to see duck and lamb on planes since it's pretty rare---the former, being much more rare than the latter. And here you are with duck appetiser and main course!

A year or two before the pandemic Lufthansa simplified their catering and that made it significantly better both in F and J. I will say more than half the time both duck or lamb are overcooked on planes--so it's always a risk.

      Thanks again!

  • Hi George, thanks for sharing this FR. LH remains an uninspiring utilitarian product and has really fallen off the pace of the ST/OW competition.

The La Prairie amenities are also a nice touch.

    I thought they used L’Occitane?

There are 22 business class seats arranged in 5 and a half rows of 2-2.

The B744 at least has the better J seat stagger than the B748 where you get to play footsies with your neighbor. No point criticizing their hard product, it is what it is, and as you already mentioned the Allegris is really only pulling them up to the standard of a 10 year old UA Polaris product. No mattress pads on West bound flights?

A bread basket was offered at the same time, but no pretzel bread.

I think this picture summarizes the lack of privacy^^

I asked for a glass of tea to wash it down.

Needing to use the phrase “wash it down” when describing the catering probably sums it up. I would imagine it is much harder to re-heat chicken for the second meal than the first. Catering went downhill quickly after the nice starter with an exploded sauce main and overcooked chicken breast.

    • Hi NGO85, thanks for reading and sorry for the slow reply.

      I thought they used L’Occitane?

You are correct, not sure why I wrote La Prairie.

The B744 at least has the better J seat stagger than the B748 where you get to play footsies with your neighbor.

I didn't realize the difference. On 748s I go out of my way to grab F so I haven't noticed the details in J.

No mattress pads on West bound flights?

None were proactively offered at least, I didn't know they might have been offered, so I did not ask.

Catering went downhill quickly after the nice starter with an exploded sauce main and overcooked chicken breast.

That's a succinct way to sum it up.
