Introduction

Welcome to this flight report! As an frequent traveller to NYC, i decided to try something different. Jet aircraft were an often go-to when commuting on the short Toronto-New York hop, however this time I tried the turboprop option. Operating this flight was Porter Airlines, a small airline based at Toronto Billy Bishop Airport.

Details

Aircraft Type: Dash 8 Q400
Departure: 16:20 (NYC time)
Arrival: 17:50 (Toronto time)

EWR Terminal & Boarding

Newark is infamous for the structure of their terminals. It can be quite difficult to snap good photos while waiting for your flight.

BA 77W & UA 764 parked at their respective gates awaiting pushback.

Porter has multiple departures from EWR daily. As one arrived, the other departed. Boarding began after our scheduled departure time.

Positioned at a window seat, was right by the prop blade but was still able to see.

Boarding was completed as quickly as possible. Shortly after pushback and taxi commenced.

Already late, our Q4 was about #6 for takeoff. Taxi was quite slow as we made our way for departure.I enjoyed the burnt orange sunset, however.

The aircraft lined up on RWY 4R and took off for YTZ. This departure warranted an amazing view of the Manhattan skyline.

Onward to Toronto!

Our route took us through northern Jersey and into Upstate NY. The sunset was phenomenal!

The frozen lakes and rivers gave a lovely contrast as the pink and purple hues of sun rays painted the sky.

The cabin took a light airy aura with little no no movement as the flight load was relatively light.

Descent into Downtown Toronto began before crossing the lake. Lights below illuminated, guiding the way.

The crew prepare the Q400 for arrival. The approach into YTZ offered nice views of the eastern Toronto skyline and beaches area.

Conclusion

Porter Airlines, although small, offers a different model in comparison to other carriers based in Canada. An easy enplane and deplane experience is ideal for the business traveller and also those who wish to avoid the hassle to large hub airports. Service was great and I'd gladly use Porter at any given opportunity.

  • Thanks for this FR.Porter is indeed different and reeally convenient to get to Toronto downtown.

    What was the catering like?

  • Beautiful sunset and night views; thanks for sharing !

  • Great flight report for "that other Canadian airline." Thanks for sharing.

The sunset on the nacelle and wing make for a great avgeek photo shoot, that's for sure. And I love the departure/arrival shots one can get at YTZ, if you happen to have a window on the correct side of the plane.

Interesting that the load seems quite light -- I've only had five total Porter segments: a very light load on YTZ-BOS, and four YTZ-IAD and return segments that were almost completely full. I would have expected EWR to be pretty full, given that NYC is a premium destination and it seems to get the lion's share of Porter's marketing attention.

    Thanks again for sharing!

    • Thanks! The sunset was indeed beautiful and lasted for most of the flight so I snapped as many photos as I could. The load was surprisingly light, but my assumption is that since they're another 11 departures apart from this one the others could have been full. Just before boarding POE136, flight 134 and as we began push another flight was taxiing to the gate.
