Review of Delta Air Lines flight from New York to San Francisco in Business

Hello and welcome to my first ever Flight Report!
For this entry, we will be traveling from New York-JFK to SFO aboard Delta's B767-300ER. I was originally booked on Premium Economy but received a last minute upgrade to Delta One. Thus, this report does not include any lounge pictures/reviews. Also, please keep in mind that since I was going to sit in economy and was not planning on writing any sort of trip report for the flight, I did not take a whole bunch of pictures. Please feel free to post comments and suggestions on how to improve my reports in the future! Thanks in advance for reading this report.
Flight DL459 leaves JFK-Terminal 4 at 08:10AM EST and is scheduled to arrive in SFO at 11:36AM PST. Sunday morning, July 31, started out with broken skies that gradually gave way to partly sunny before the flight departed. I was planning on printing my boarding pass when I got to the airport and was just very surprised when I see the printout from one of the Delta Kiosks, that my seat is now 6D. I spoke to one of the agents to confirm that the assignment is indeed correct–Delta One baby!
I travel a lot but not on premium classes hence, I was quite looking forward to this ~5:30 transcontinental flight. I quickly checked SeatGuru to learn more about the seat. Alas, 6D on the 763 does NOT have a window! Shame, but who's complaining when you got the upgrade for free in the first place!
Anyway, here is our plane for this flight: N193DN which made its first flight back in 1997–18 years ago!

For the 763, Delta One seats are arranged in 1-2-1 configuration, providing aisle-access on every seat. I have read reports elsewhere that the 757 fielded on the transcon flights between JFK-LAX and JFK-SFO provide slightly better product, despite the lack of aisle-access for the window seats. I guess we'll have to find that out in the future! The business seats on the 767 are also oriented straight unlike the reverse-herringbone found on their 772, 744, and 333 aircraft. For this flight, you are provided with noise-canceling headphones, Tumi Amenity Kit, and Westin comforter and pillow. Furthermore, pre-departure drinks of either water or orange juice were offered.

I wasn't able to get a legroom shot but as you can see from the guy's feet on the left, there's PLENTY! I have a 5'6" frame so I usually don't have this problem, even in the smallest of economy seats.

It took a while taxiing but we were finally able to take off out of 13L. Service started soon after with warm towel and a selection of drinks. I didn't see any menu on any of the seats and the flight attendants (two for J-class) went around to take our orders. My FA offered three different breakfast options (couldn't quite remember all of them though) and I ended up settling on an omelette meal. The meal started off with a selection of either a bagel or croissant–I took the latter. A tray was then set up containing a selection of fruits, yogurt, and cheese and crackers. The fruit plate was then taken out and you were then given the main course–omelette, sausage, and potatoes–pretty typical American breakfast I think.

Since I woke up pretty early for this flight and the fact that I have to meet a friend in SFO for lunch, I decided to put my seat in sleep mode and nap for a few hours. The seat (err… bed) was very comfortable and the Westin products that were provided definitely helped a lot. I managed to sleep for 3 hours before being woken up by light turbulence over the Western Rockies. The FAs would continuously go around the cabin offering drinks and a selection of snacks, i.e. crackers, peanuts, bananas, etc. I settled for an OJ and a cookie and decided to play with the IFE.

There's plenty of new releases available, foreign films, as well as a good amount of TV Shows. I decided to spend the last hour and a half watching Always Sunny in Philadelphia!
The descent and approach into SFO were uneventful, not helped by the fact that I don't have direct window access. We landed on 28L and quickly taxied to the terminal.

Conclusion

This business-class offering from Delta is pretty great! Comfortable seats and good food definitely made the nearly 6-hour flight memorable...not to mention that it was a last-minute upgrade. Definitely looking forward to trying their product more in the future!

  • Nice first report. DL with the 767s is the only airline offering direct aisle access on the premium transcon routes. Though it's not consistent since most flights are on 757s. Breakfast is probably the least exiting of meal times in Business class, but DL's catering is consistently good. How did you score the upgrade? Was it an op-up or an Elite upgrade? Back when I was DL Platinum until 2014, DL stopped Medallion upgrades on the premium transcon routes. Have they started back up again?
