I won’t go into detail in my research for a meeting in Oslo, but it all boiled down to this:
• Norwegian arrived too late in OSL the day before
• Flying Lufthansa resulted in wasting an entire afternoon, or making it too late in OSL
• Air France was leaving OSL too early on the way back
Hence this SAS routing which was not ideal, since I had to either eat in CDG1 or buy on board on the way in, and the return trip included a 30’ layover in CPH on a Friday evening…
• CDG-OSL : SK834 14:05 – 16:20
• OSL – CPH : SK461 18:00 – 19:10 here
• CPH – CDG SK1563 19:40 – 21:40 there
… but the return trip did not happen exactly this way (teaser).
I would have liked to leave Paris early to do some tourism in OSL a zero marginal cost, but there was no single airline flight combination which made it possible.
I left by car to the airport somewhat early because
a) it was raining, which always slows down the traffic and increases the risk of an accident creating a traffic jam
b) I was concerned that there could be more security and ID checks of all kinds at the airport, although this was an intra-Schengen Zone flight. We were in mid-November 2015, and I had received during the previous week-end messages of concern and support from my friends living on both sides of the Pacific Ocean…

photo montage messages de soutien 7b

… and in particular from one of cities in the world which lit their iconic building with French colors as a gesture of support.

photo 20151114-taipei 101.jpeg

I received the day before, at ETD-22h, a reminder that I could use the OLCI. An hour or two later, there was still ample choice. Row 10 of SAS’ 738s does not have windows, and anyway I had no access to the rows forward, so I chose a window seat behind the wing, on the side opposite the sun direction. Note that SAS is just as superstitious as AF : there was no row 13.

photo OLCI 1a

I made it at half past noon in CDG and there were definitely no crowds there. There were nearly fewer passengers than soldiers in full gear patrolling slowly, widely spread from each other and stopping every ten-twenty meters to ostensibly look all around them.

Going to the machine to obtain my BP

photo IMG_0084a

It did not recognize my credit card

photo IMG_0085a

It did not consider reading my passport either, although it could.

photo IMG_0088a

But it did recognize my PNR

photo IMG_0086a

I had left my FF card at home, and I did not understand that "Enter card manually” actually meant typing manually the card number. I sometimes have a hard time with the way the French use English.

photo IMG_0087a

I had my BP without a FF number, and went up to the Arrivals level for some plane spotting (the view is better, because it is two levels further up).

photo IMG_0091a

In middle of the day, the harvest was rather slim: I saw more (terminal) satellites than planes

photo IMG_0110aphoto IMG_0112a

The security check was so empty that I nearly went through inadvertently without stopping !:)

photo IMG_0116a

The metal detector did not beep, but a security staff noticed a 100% plastic splint, and tapped it with cotton for explosive detection (there has been explosive shoes; why not an explosive splint too?)
It had been a very bad winter for a marathon runner, and this was the result of one of several ankle injuries which ruined my season (at time of posting, I resumed training, starting back from a humbling level after several months of forced rest).

photo IMG_0122a

So I limped my way into a rather empty Satellite 7

photo IMG_0115a

I settled there in the vicinity of an Icelandair757 waiting for her last passengers, with a view on the tarmac despite the stupid frosting of the lower part of the windows,

photo IMG_0121a

… with a power port at the foot of my seat and a free internet access with a decent bandwidth.

Looking for good weather in Paris was not a good idea for the passengers of this Jet2 737.

Arrival of the 738 which will operate my flight

photo IMG_0134a

The pictograms for the baby-care room are no longer female in CDG.

photo IMG_0143a

Since I could claim to be (moderately) handicapped, and actually because the standard toilets were all occupied, I could legitimately use these toilets for handicapped passengers. Maybe out of coherence, the hand dryer was handicapped too, i.e. it was out of operation.

photo IMG_0145a

… and there was no fresh water.

photo IMG_0146a

For younger (or not so young) travelers, there were PS3 stations which did not attract gamers

photo IMG_0147a

There was an SAS counter (with staff provided by Alyzia, a ground handling company) : I tried, and no problem, a smiling staff replaced my BR FF number which is no longer relevant by my LH number.

photo IMG_0148a

The 738 at the gate. Geeks will be interested to know that this was LN-RPR, in revenue service since 14/09/2000.

photo IMG_0149a

Going painfully down a windowless jetbridge

photo IMG_0150a

The load ratio was low : probably hardly more than 40%

photo IMG_0161a

There were two other passengers in my row

photo IMG_0156a

The plane had not been cleaned very thoroughly, but the turnaround in CDG was short

photo IMG_0153a

The seat pitch was decent

photo IMG_0159aphoto IMG_0158a

SAS adopted the design of a magazine pocket in the upper section of the seat, which leaves extra space underneath for the legs.

photo IMG_0154a

The seats can unfortunately recline, and using my laptop became impossible. I sat sideways, taking advantage of the absence of a passenger on the middle seat, but this was not very comfortable. The seat was also very hard, with an uncomfortable shape, or one which was not adapted to that of my body.

My kind compassion to all those who lost beloved ones.

photo img_3666a

You can’t see that very well, but there was a new blue-white-red light pattern on Terminal 1. At night, it stands out very well.

photo IMG_0178a

For her rarity, not the quality of the picture, this was the Byelorussian 737 following us towards the runway

photo IMG_0179a

Take off at ETD+19’

photo IMG_0183a

The cloud cover was very low, so we were promptly in it

photo IMG_0186a

SAS only offers drinks – a rather nondescript coffee for me

photo IMG_0187a

For the rest, it was only BOB, and this was the selection of intra-European flights

photo IMG_0167aphoto IMG_0169a

My readers may have noticed that this 738 did not have winglets - a rarity in Europe (but not in China)

photo IMG_0189a

This is the non-winglet with the moon

photo IMG_0188a

My neighbor went to the toilets, and since the rear of the aircraft was completely empty, I asked the FAs in the rear galley if I could change seat. No problem and I had a smile as a bonus.

photo IMG_0192a

It would be comfortable there

photo IMG_0193a

… especially for doing that

photo IMG_0198a

Oh yes, the toilets were clean, as they should be, and the baby diaper change table was for female use, as there is no reason that they should be.

photo IMG_0194a

It does not show well on these pictures, but the wing took a progressively orange tint due to the sunset

photo IMG_0232a

Lillestrøm is the only stop of the Flytoget train between the airport and the central station. That station was nothing exciting when seen on the way back when the train stopped there.

photo IMG_0287a

Kiss landing ; the captain stressed that we had landed 15’ early, which meant there was a comfortable margin built in the schedule

photo IMG_0241a

A last look at LN-RPR

photo IMG_0244a

It was a looong walk to the exit …

photo IMG_0249a

… and the FAs who recognized me very well were very compassionate at my slow limping gait. A good point for them for not ignoring me, or saying simply good-bye..

photo IMG_0247a

The advantage of that corridor was that it was plane spotter-friendly, which is not common when deplaning. I saw a Norwegian 787 while taxiing, but I have pictures of 737s only.

photo IMG_0256a

The arrival circuit goes on a bridge above the airside Departures area

photo IMG_0252a

Going shortly and straight ahead through a duty free shopping area to reach eventually the luggage delivery room.

photo IMG_0257a

And arrival landside, to take the expensive but comfortable Flytoget train

photo IMG_0258a

The trains leave every 10 minutes, only that the next one was cancelled

photo IMG_0261a

The train is indeed comfortable, on the condition of having a seat, which was not the case of all passengers

photo IMG_0266a

The seats are a lot more comfortable than those of SAS. They do not recline, providing a decent albeit not luxurious space for the legs

photo IMG_0268a

There is an AC power port for each seat

photo IMG_0267a

And free wifi internet access. Passengers from Paris can keep dreaming of the CDG Express train which is a 21st century project, possibly lasting until the end of the century, given the present progress rate.

photo IMG_0269a

There is even a safety card, in a durable material

photo IMG_0270a

Arrival at the Scandic Byporten, accessible directly through the shopping mall of Oslo’s central station.

Conclusion

Only because the low fill ration made it possible to change seat do I not penalize more the lack of comfort of the too hard seat and the nuisance of the reclining of the seat in front of me. The rather mediocre coffee deserved only half a point above average for catering. No newspapers or IFE, but an in-flight magazine which was marginally above the utterly uninteresting average. Only the FAs save the record of SAS, even though they had few opportunities of interaction with the passengers.

I expected trouble due to the state of emergency, but the fluidity of the controls in CDG1 was ideal. The accessibility of CDG is always hampered by the absence of a decent rail link, but at that time and for a short round trip, driving to the airport was a good option. A good point for the ground staff was courteously and efficiently changed my FF reference.

No special problem in OSL, and high level comfort of the Flytoget which reaches directly the city center.

  • Nice report, thanks for sharing!

In Southern Asia, I know for a fact that Jet Airways, SpiceJet, Vistara and SriLankan Airlines do not use row number 13.

I'm sorry to hear about your leg injury - I hope you make a speedy recovery!!

The FedEx plane is actually a Boeing 777 Freighter - based on the concept of the passenger Boeing 777-200LR.

Unfortunate to know about the uncomfortable cabin on the Boeing 737...but I guess there isn't much to expect on such low cost carriers anyway...

Lucky you got a no-winglet B737-800! They are getting increasingly rare. And I remember, there was a time when I was unhappy about not getting a winglet B737-800 flight :P

Lovely pictures of the approach in to Oslo, and super low light images of the B737s at the gate!

    Once again, thanks for sharing!

    Cheers.

    • I did not know that airlines in this other part of the world also did not have a Row 13; thanks for the trivia information :)

Medical recovery of such injuries is always boringly long (otherwise, it is not durable), and recovery of the previous athletic level even longer afterwards. C'est la vie (that's life)...

Thanks for the correction about the Fedex aircraft - I had a doubt, actually.

There was even a time when I felt lucky to have a winglet B737-800 :P

      Thanks for your comment !

  • Thank you for sharing this FR with us!

“Norwegian arrived too late in OSL the day before“

    - I've noticed that's pretty normal for DY's European arrivals into Scandinavian Airports. Flights from BOD, ORY, AMS, SXF, BCN, MAN and AMS arrive between 23:00 and 00:00 at ARN.

Nice spotting shots at CDG despite the weather, not very nice for arriving tourists in Paris though.

The cabins in DY's 737s are so much better than SK's tired-looking cabins.

    Beautiful aerial shots!

Have a good one, see you!

    • My uneducated guess is that DY's landing/departing slots are cheaper.

This satellite at Terminal 1 offers a good view of the closest north runway, and is quite close to it. The only problem is that you need to stand up, because of the gradual frosting of the lower section of the window

Thanks for your comment, and yes, these ankle injuries are now past history :)

  • I hope it's much better now with the ankle!

  • Thank you for sharing Marathon!

OSL is on my bucket list, but hopefully not in November^^ Reminds me of my trip to CPH the week before you took this one to OSL, too cold for me^^

I don't think I have ever seen CDG look so empty on the inside, very eerie indeed.

"The plane had not been cleaned very thoroughly, but the turnaround in CDG was short"

    - For a 15 year old plane, it looks pretty good to me^^ The hard product doesn't look so LCC as SK has been leaning towards. A good seat pitch and a free drink is a free drink^^ Just remember that you are only allowed one free drink per meal on their long haul flights ;)

The wingletless B738s are also present in the US, AS and WN both have some still floating around. They remind me of the old NH B735s^^

Beautiful nighttime shots deplaning in OSL. I love the 4pm twilight.

The train from OSL looks very similar to the Arlanda Express, hopefully also a fraction of the price^^

    • “OSL is on my bucket list, but hopefully not in November^^ Reminds me of my trip to CPH the week before you took this one to OSL, too cold for me^^”

      - The weather is unfortunately never a parameter in scheduling my business trips ^^

“I don't think I have ever seen CDG look so empty on the inside, very eerie indeed.”

      - It was maybe a low traffic time slot in the day; I do not have much Terminal 1 experience.

“For a 15 year old plane, it looks pretty good to me^^”

      - Accepted ^^

      - Noted that the best drink/distance ratio is on SK’s short haul routes ^^

“The train from OSL looks very similar to the Arlanda Express, hopefully also a fraction of the price^^”

      - The Flytoget costs 180 NOK ( ~181 SEK) to Oslo Sentral, versus 280 SEK one way / 540 SEK round trip for the Arlanda Express. Not what I would call cheap, but more reasonably priced.

      Thanks for your comments !

      • “Not what I would call cheap, but more reasonably priced."

        - All things in life are relative ;) Still cheaper than getting to Quito from UIO^^
