Spending the night in Amsterdam Schipol gave me a deserted airport to photograph at my hearts content. Security was quiet and with no one essentially around to be bothered by me pointing a camera at them, I thought- why not. This is half the reason I enjoy roughing the night in an airport. It feels brilliant to have an airport to yourself…

In the morning I went to the Viewing Deck in time for it to be open. I got some images, but the cold that was easily breaking through my clothes meant I didn't hang around long.

I checked in on-line the night before for my CityJet flight to LCY, so I went airside and after going to the D-Gates I just set up on a lounge chair and photographed the planes taxiing and departing.

After a nice morning of getting varied mixture of aircraft. I checked out my Avro RJ85, which was parked up at Gate 24 awaiting to fly WX178 back to LCY, It turned out to be EI-RJR.

The plane began the boarding process 30 minutes before our scheduled push-back time. The plane was pretty full.
I booked myself into Seat 14A, however someone else had occupied the seat, But… I found the row behind empty and this was a bonus, it was a 2 seat row. With a small gap to place my bag between the fuselage and the seat. The seats had tabels inside the armrests and I had three tabels from the seats in-front. What's more- No one sat in Seat 15B, again- I had the whole row to myself and it meant I could have somewhere to put my camera. It felt like getting a First Class seat for an economy ticket.

We pushed back ahead of schedule and took off pretty quickly as we only taxied to the runway right behind us. Unlike last time, where we went ALL THE WAY to the Polderbaan.

We got about 10 minutes into our flight before the crew began to dish out the Beverages. CityJet provides free snacks and drinks on their flights. I picked up a Tea and packed of Crisps. Then the Flight Attendent gave me a small cake (that was the alternative) and a packet of the BBQ Corn bites. Which was very nice of him. I didn't finish all the items, I took the crisps home and had them a few days later… Certainly more than enough for a short flight!

We started our descent just before the shorelines of England came into sight. The bright clear weather allowed for some nice shots.

We landed at London City around 20 minutes AHEAD of Schedule, which was amazing to hear. I quickly got through passport control, via a visit to the Flight Deck and spent some time (about 1-2 hours) spotting at London City before heading back to my home of Burnham.

Conclusion

AMS- Brilliant airport, nice and big with quite a few places open 24/7 to get regular drinks and FREE charger points for my phone and Charging Stick. Great viewing deck. Amazing air-side viewing opportunities.

LCY- Very small and busy airport, really lovely place. Nice area for viewing arrivals and departures facing the runway.

CityJet- Just as brilliant as my last flight with them 10 months earlier. I will definitely be back again on them in 2017.

  • Empty airports have an eerie look of being frozen in time : where have the users and staff gone ?

Nice plane spotting despite the cold... and some picture being too reduced in size.

    Thanks for sharing !

    • Thank you. I have to get some of the images from my DSLR after sharing on Facebook as the files normally are too big for this site. I love having an airport to myself.

    • If you are in the Windows world, Irfanview is a easy to use / does it (nearly) all freeware for all your image-related needs when posting a report on this website. That includes of course picture downsizing, one at a time or in bulk.

I was told there are similar tools for the Apple world.

    • Thanks for the advice. I do this to save money to be fair, but I will look into it for my next trip there alone.

  • Thank You for your detailed Flight Report. Next time you are in schipol overnight you should stay at the CitizenM hotel. It's affordable, modern, and if you ask for a room with views onto the tarmac, you can do planespotting in bed (literally!!). Website:

  • Nice catering for a short-haul flight
