After arrival at Frankfurt I headed to B gates area, as my flight to YVR was departing from there. After the security check I went to LH business lounge, which was crowded at lunch time. Boarding started at 12h45 for the 13h25 departure flight LH492, that would be flown by the B747-400 D-ABVR, an aircraft with 3 class layout, Y, C and F (upper deck). Being booked on C class, I was surprised, during online check-in, that the upper deck was available for seating the C class passengers. Right away I booked the 84C seat, in the back of the F cabin.

Boarding was held through 2 gates, one for C and another for Y class passengers. I went to my seat on the upper deck, which was full, with 8 C class passengers, having the luck to be seated on the F class cabin. We were welcomed by the flight attendant, explaining that we could make use of all the “hardware” of the first class cabin, however the service would be the usual business class, in particular the meals. Off course that the F cabin, on the upper deck, is a much more cosy space and privacy was a guarantee with the seat arrangement of 1-1 with a bed aside. Welcome drinks were offered on the ground (choice between champagne, water or orange juice).

After some delay the take-off was at 13h55, that is 30 min after schedule departure time. The expected flight time would be only 9h15 so we would be arriving Vancouver ahead of schedule. Soon after take-off the crew came along with the menus and hot towels. All the service was explained on the A4 menu.

First of all, about 40 min into the flight, crew offered drinks with pretzels, as usual before the meal service.

Then the lunch service started with the appetizers: marinated beef strips with carrots and almonds, asparagus salad with king prawns, grilled marinated vegetables with shaved parmesan cheese and cherry tomatoes plus seasonal salad leaf salad presented with thousand island dressing. Drinks were offered again, I had a orange juice. Afterwards, it was time for the main course. There were 3 choices. I had the arctic char with stewed leek and pearl barley risotto. I was tasty and well cooked. Different types of bread were offered along. For the dessert I had tête de moine, wine cheese and country cheese accompanied by fig mustard, buttermilk mousse with rhubarb vanilla compote and fruit salad. All tasty! To finish the meal I had some Baileys with chocolates.

Then it was time to sleep but as the crew did not asked to close the window shades they remained open. With lots of choice on the IFE and reading material I could only find 45 min to sleep on the flat bed next to my seat. Most of the passengers on the F cabin were awake during the flight. About 5 hours into the flight, some snacks were offered: chocolates, cakes and sandwiches as long as drinks. Meanwhile water and orange juice were offered several times during all the flight.

The flight route would take us to the north of Greenland and ETA at YVR was set to 14h05 local time (9 hours less than in FRA).

1h15 before arrival it was time for the second service. This time consisted of asparagus stew, caesar salad and cherry marble cake with cream. I expected better for such a long flight.

Landing was at 14h08, 12 min before schedule time.

It was an excellent flight at F cabin with a C class ticket and the service was all personalized. Very good!
After an overnight in Vancouver, it was time to board MS “Zaandam” for a 7 night cruise northbound to Anchorage, with stops at Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Glacier Bay. An amazing trip!

Was it a business class service with a first class seat? The meals look like Biz class
Hi!!!
Thank you for sharing this wonderful report with us
You seem lucky to have a first class seat for a business class ticket!
Service looks impressive, Lufthansa never fails to please me on their flights ;-)
The second meal looks pretty average, but it's good for me ;-)
Thanks again for sharing!
Yes it was business class service on the first class cabin:)
It seems they overbooked the C class cabin so they needed to use the F cabin seats. Other B747-400 only have C and Y cabin, but not this one.
Hello CS-TTI and thank you for sharing this report.
What a treat to get to sit upstairs in that cabin! I'm not sure about the overbook theory as in my experience when there is an op-up to a higher cabin you would receive teh full service in that cabin. Perhpas Lufty doesn't sell F on this route or there was an equipment swap?
Beautiful shots from the cruise.
Thanks again and happy flying.
Hello! LH didn't sell F cabine seats on that flight. When I checked in online I saw the C class cabin all booked, that's why I think they needed some extra seats, making use of the F class cabin seats. The aircraft type was B744, but they have several versions of this type, some of them with only Y and C class cabin.
Thanks for the nice report and good for you for getting the upper deck on this flight.
Catering could be better in its presentation.
