So here is Part 2: return flight MAN-MUC with Singapore Airlines.
Part 1 can be found here: http://flight-report.com/en/report-10220.html
First of all here are a few pictures of an eventful Saturday in Manchester.
Manchester Cathedral

China Town

Old Trafford

If you don't need to see everything (Museums and so on), one or two days are enough to see the most important and famous sights of Manchester. Overall Manchester is a very beautiful city, with some new and old parts and with the tram system you get to almost every point very easy.
Now let's talk about the important thing, the return flight.
Manchester Airport has 3 Terminals, SQ operates from Terminal 2 so we got there by hotel shuttle. By the way, I guess every MAN Airport hotel offers a free hotel shuttle which drives to every terminal. You can even call them from the MAN tram station to pick you up within just a few minutes.
Check in counters of Singapore Airlines are located on the first floor and easy to find, no worries here. There were a few counters but no passengers to check in, so check in was finished very quickly. Going through the security check to the departure gates is completed in just a few minutes.
Like at every airport there were a lot of duty free shops as well as restaurants
We took a break and watched around Terminal 2, there were a lot of duty free shops and some restaurants - like at every Airport.

Arriving at our gate and the first look at todays SQ B777-300ER

Airframe Details:
Registration: 9V-SWP / B777-300ER
First Flight: April 2008
Deliverd: 11. Apr 2008
(just a few weeks older than the aircraft the day before)
Scheduled departure: 09:10am | Actual departure: 09:30am
Scheduled arrival: 12:15pm | Actual arrival: 12:10pm
The flight from Munich arrived on time but boarding began about 30min later than scheduled. I'm not sure but I think that SQ wanted to wait longer in Manchester because of a busy Terminal 2 in Munich. Although we arrived on time, we still had to wait about 10min until we were able to get to the gate in Munich.
Boarding was finished very quickly because there were almost no passengers, let's say only 40-50 people overall. But we had a lot of freight (thermal insulation) in the belly.

Take off video from Manchester
During climbing

We headed south and after Manchester complete South-England was under some very thick clouds.

Shortly after seat belt signs switched off the crew prepared the breakfast.
Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of the meal but it was almost the same sandwich like on the MUC-MAN sector the day before. Not bad at all.
Second service, only drinks of course, was about 45min before arrival.

Some pictures of the cabin

Awesome seat pitch

Flight was very uneventful and calm. I chose to read a little and watched some short movies about Singapore, the Singapore F1 Grand Prix on the inflight entertainment system.
Descending from flight level

Munich with runway 26R is in sight

And there we are, back home again

Overall Manchester is a very beautiful city
- Not the impression that is often given of the city back in the States. I have heard it compared to Cleveland, a former manufacturing center that is in need of reurbanization. Your tourist bonus makes it look nice though, except for that picture of Old Trafford ;)
only 40-50 people overall
- Makes for a very comfortable ride on beautiful 77W. Despite being an older 77W, the cabin looks to be in good shape.
How did the fares on this fifth-freedom route compare to other European legacy carriers?
You are absolutely right, there is lot of industry in Manchester and you can see it definitely. I guess it always depends on how much you see and so on.

Singapore Airlines was definitely the cheapest on that weekend. LH operates two or three direct flights to Manchester but they are more expensive. Another factor is, that it depends on how long you wanna go - overall there was a price difference of about 50€ per person.
